 Crossing time zones on a bike has to be one of the most exhilarating feelings one can experience while traveling. Now, I'm not including skydiving, which is hardly "traveling," or any of those extreme forms of transportation, which I hear can be quite exhilarating but in a different way that crossing time zones is exhilarating. 

Many of you may think I'm just being silly with all this time zone exhilaration mumbo-jumbo, but I will tell you that when we were cruising down the interstate at twenty miles per hour and we passed the sign announcing our exit of the Mountain Standard Time Zone and our entrance into Pacific Standard Time Zone, I felt the power one feels when he knows he is chasing the sun and actually gaining something from it.
             That's really just a fancy way to say we crossed the border into Oregon to make this ride a Tri-State enterprise. The ride itself was good, except for the common flaw that is surfacing in all our rides that we always save the biggest hills to the end.
 But we made it to Baker City with no problems and with plenty of time to get a hotel, swim in the pool, soak in the hot tub and dine.

It felt a little like we were leaving home for the second time, but we had to wait until the afternoon to feel that way.  What I mean is our plan to get an early start was foiled quickly by bike repairs and our general stupidity.             When we finally did get off, we each felt like a million bucks because of the weekend of rest. Day 32 – Thursday, July 19, 2001 Bodega Bay, CA – Lafayette, CA 78.70 Miles 12.51 Average Speed 6:08:32 ride time 9AM Departure 6PM Arrival 2087.79 Total Trek Miles             Today would conclude the second and longest leg of the trip, sandwiched between a day of rest in Victoria, B.C. and a four-day weekend in Lafayette, CA.  The day broke with heavy fog and by the time of our departure the air still hung heavy around us.  The ride was mostly costal, except for a 20-mile jaunt inland littered with rolling brown hills.  Our excitement helped us up the hills as little as excitement can.  Each ascent was rewarded with a winding decent amid eucalyptus and pine and redwood.  We met the coast again at Stinson Beach. After that, grueling hills awaited us for the next 20 miles until we dropped down into Sausalito and over the Golden Gate Bridge.  We met...
